Bokor Hill station
Most people come to Kampot to see the crumbling grandeur of the Bokor Hill Station, up in the Bokor National Park, a crazy uphill drive. The road should only be taken by 4 wheel vehicles, yet somehow the local drivers do it in sedans, an experience in itself.
The Hill Station was founded by the French in 1922, was attacked and held by both the Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge, and today exists as a ghost town pockmarked with bullets. After the 2-hour drive through the road-encroaching forest, you’ll be able to explore several interesting decayed structures, including the statuesque casino, hotel, Buddhist temple, and Catholic church.
You can also stay at the Ranger Station overnight, but bring your own food and something warm, as it gets cold at night. The park itself has a nice waterfall, and there is abundant animal and bird life. Consult the ranger staff at the gate on the main road if you want to venture off on your own. For an additional fee, a ranger will accompany you, important because of occasional landmines still dotting the area. Fee for a visit to the Hill Station alone is $5 USD.
Hill Station highlights include:
- Bokor Palace Hotel (watch your step, some stairways lead to a void) GPS Coordinates: N10° 37.530’, E104° 01.539’
- Casino (small snack shop in rear) GPS Coordinates: N10° 37.336’, E104° 01.582’
- Catholic Church (note bullet holes throughout) GPS Coordinates: N10° 37.667’, E104° 01.372’
- “5 Boats” Wat (note Khmer Rouge radar support pillars) GPS Coordinates: N10° 37.783’, E104° 01.060’
- Ranger Station (toilets here, and you can stay overnight, but bring your own food) GPS Coordinates: N10° 37.630’, E104° 01.544’
Particularly near the hotel, try to stay on marked paths, as local legend has it that there remains at least one land mine in the vicinity.
Bokor Hill Station is highly recommended, and on a clear day provides great views of the ocean, and Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island.
