Countryside Top 4
1) Wat Preah Vihear (Khao Phra Wihan) was built between the 10th and 12th centuries ACE, with much of the building sponsored by Suryavarman II, the same Khmer king responsible for constructing Angkor Wat. Even though it’s in Cambodia, it’s only accessible through Thailand, and we tell you how to get there.
2) Battambang, a pleasant city in the north, has wonderful colonial buildings, the hilltop temple of Wat Ek Phnom, and the incredible bamboo train.
3) Sambor Prei Kuk, near Kompong Thom, is situated between Phnom Penh and Siem Riep, on Hiway 6. It consists of over 100 pre-Angkorian temples. Though not as impressive as those at Angkor Wat up the river, they provide a historical context that is a must for temple-hoppers.
4) Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei are two stupa-crowned hills just outside of the town of Kompong Cham, with nice country views and very nice murals.
